Ganga Dussehra: A Celebration of Goddess Ganga's Descent

Ganga Dussehra: A Celebration of Goddess Ganga's Descent

    Jun 11, 2024

    What is Ganga Dusshera?

Ganga Dussehra is a festival celebrated in India to honour the descent of the holy river Ganga on Earth. It usually falls in May or June. People gather on the river's banks to participate in rituals and ceremonies. They offer prayers and flowers to the river. The festival is a time for spiritual reflection and gratitude.

What is the significance of Ganga Dusshera?

It celebrates Goddess Ganga's descent to Earth. She came to cleanse Bhagiratha's cursed ancestors. Ganga Dussehra, also known as Gangavataran, is a Hindu festival celebrating the avatarana (descent) of the Ganges. Hindus believe that the holy river Ganges descended from heaven to earth on this day. Ganga Dussehra occurs on Dashami (10th day) of the waxing moon (Shukla Paksha) of the Hindu calendar month Jyeshtha. The festival celebration lasts ten days, including the nine days preceding this holy day.

What Rituals and Traditions are followed on Ganga Dusshera?

    • During Ganga Dussehra, devotees worship and cleanse in the Ganges.

    • They believe giving to the poor, known as Dan-Punya, earns spiritual merit and forgiveness.

    • Pilgrims visit Prayagraj, Garhmukteshwar, Haridwar, Rishikesh, and Varanasi for these rituals.
